The South Australian Malinauskas Labor State Government has provided Master Builders SA with a grant of $150,000 to appoint wellness ambassadors to help business owners and workers navigate common pressures in the construction industry.
The program will provide support for business owners, subcontractors and workers, including tailored support for female and First Nations members in the industry.
Master Builders SA have identified passionate wellness ambassadors based on their mentoring and industry experience, mental health advocacy, and/or a personal journey overcoming stress, burnout, and mental health challenges.
RISE is available free of charge to all members of the building and construction industry, regardless of membership with Master Builders SA.
Master Builders SA in conjunction with the South Australian Malinauskas Labor State Government announced the launch of RISE – a crucial mental health support program for South Australia’s building and construction industry in July 2023.
RISE - the Building and Construction Mental Health Support Program aims to reduce the prevalence of mental illness and suicide in the Australian building and construction industry - an industry where, sadly, we lose a worker to suicide every second day.
In fact, Australian building and construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than in a workplace accident.
Promoting Healthy Habits: Wellness ambassadors provide practical guidance for stress management, sleep habits, physical health, and other aspects of well-being.
Providing Resources and Information: Wellness ambassadors can share reliable resources, articles, and tools on a variety of topics. They remain updated on industry trends to ensure the information they provide is accurate and evidence-based.
Offering Personal Guidance: Wellness ambassadors actively listen, motivate, set goals, and help individuals develop personalised plans through one-on-one coaching and guidance.
Being a Role Model: Leading by example, our wellness ambassadors demonstrate commitment to well-being through their own behaviours and experience, serving as exemplar role models in the building and construction industry.
When I was young I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. I was told that I wasn’t very smart and wouldn’t amount to much. I dreamt of running a business of my own, although I had no idea what business that might be…
Does this sound familiar?
With no interest in school, I took the first opportunity to leave, becoming an apprentice electrician at 16. Doing an apprenticeship was a great way to get some structure in my life and give me some direction. I knew that I wanted more, but what?
I took every opportunity to educate myself, reading self development books and doing courses (there was no internet back then!). It wasn’t until I found my mentor that I truly had my first big break.
With his guidance, I completed a number of courses with the guarantee of an overseas job opportunity with his company if I showed I was willing to work hard.
Have you noticed that when you focus on something for long enough, opportunities present themselves? It’s in these moments that our lives change.
Over the last 25+ years I have successfully managed businesses through financial crisis, changes in government, legislation and taxation, redundancies, court actions and even political unrest. This experience has granted me incredible insight in what to do and what not to do for your business to succeed.
While I enjoyed the work, it was always for someone else and only for one business at a time.
In 2016 my mentor died of cancer after a long and successful career. It saddened me deeply knowing that he never got to fulfil his lifelong dream of enjoying retirement with his family. That was the turning point for me. The time for me to do my own thing.
If not now, then when?
We only get one shot at life, there is no dress rehearsal.
What’s holding you back from having the life you dream of?
Is it time to get some help from someone who’s been in your position and has come out the other side?
In this the 11th episode, of the Master Builders SA Building Perspective Podcast, Season 3 Master Builders SA CEO Will Frogley sits down with Paul Rogers, former sparky and globetrotting telecoms professional turned author/business coach. Paul is also a wellness ambassador with Master Builders SA recently announced mental health support program aimed at reducing mental illness and suicide in the Australian construction industry.
The scope of Paul’s career is vast, spanning from local teenage tradie ambitions, to telecommunication management in the Middle East, publishing a book titled “Get Off The Tools!!”, to present-day business coaching.
In this episode, Paul delivers a range of business advice; from business inception when getting your name out is the objective, to established business owners needing to get off the tools, and then to the growth of a business needing leadership and people management skills. Importantly, Will and Paul emphasise the importance of spending time with friends, family, and loved ones for improved mental health and wellbeing during all phases of your career, with Will aptly closing the podcast: “One thing we can never get back is time”.
