ADHD and the Electrical Trade

ADHD and the Electrical Trade

There's a thread that comes up on electrician forums every few months. Someone asks: ‘Does anyone else have ADHD? Does it affect your work?’

The responses are usually the same: ‘Being ADHD is actually beneficial in this trade.’

It's anecdotal, but it lines up with what researchers understand about how ADHD brains respond to stimulation, novelty and reward.

Why the electrical trade specifically works for ADHD

A core feature of ADHD, according to Dr. Russell Barkley's model of the condition, is difficulty sustaining motivation and attention on tasks that don't offer immediate stimulation or feedback. Performance on engaging, hands-on, fast-changing tasks, though, is often unaffected, or even strong.

Neuroimaging research led by Dr. Nora Volkow has linked this pattern to differences in the brain's dopamine reward pathway (Volkow et al., Molecular Psychiatry, 2011). That helps explain why routine, low-stimulation work can feel unbearable, while high-engagement, high-novelty work doesn't.

The electrical trade sits at the high-novelty end of that scale. Every fault is different. Every site is different. Every job needs you to think, move, problem-solve and adapt. Electricians with ADHD, across forums and coaching conversations alike, tend to say the same thing: they'd be bored and burned out in a desk job, but on the tools, they come alive.

ADHD traits that can work in your favour as an electrician

  • Hyperfocus: when you're tracking down a fault in a 50-year-old switchboard, an ADHD brain can lock in and stay locked in until it's solved.

  • Novelty drive: every new fault is a puzzle, and new problems tend to hold ADHD attention better than repetitive ones.

  • Crisis performance: many people with ADHD report performing at their best under real pressure, when the stakes force full engagement.

  • High energy for physical work: long, varied days on site suit a brain that struggles to sit still.

These are real, commonly reported patterns. Not a guarantee, and not a diagnosis. If a few of them sound like you, it's worth exploring with a GP rather than treating it as settled.

The challenge: when the business side doesn't match the trade side

Here's the hard truth. Being a strong electrician with ADHD is common. Running a strong electrical business with ADHD is harder.

Quoting, invoicing, managing subcontractors, following up leads, doing the BAS: these are exactly the kinds of repetitive, admin-heavy tasks that ADHD brains tend to struggle with most, for the same dopamine and motivation reasons described above.

The solution isn't to become a different person. It's to build systems, and where possible, bring in support, that handle the parts your brain isn't built for.

In our coaching program, we work with trade business owners to identify exactly where the leaks are and build practical systems around them. Not generic advice: specific solutions for how your brain actually works.

Because the goal isn't to turn an ADHD electrician into an accountant. The goal is to let the electrician do what they're strong at, and have a business that runs properly behind them.
